In this week’s edition of the Pharisee File, Jerry Robinson asks: Will Same-Sex Marriage Lead to Polygamy?

Polygamy was a common practice in the Old Testament. Abraham, Jacob, Ezra, Gideon, Hosea, Joash, Moses, Eliphaz, Caleb, Issachar, Rehoboam all had multiple wives according to the Bible.

There are at least 40 different individuals in the Old Testament that practiced polygamy.

EXODUS 21:10 – “If a man who has married a slave wife takes another wife for himself, he must not neglect the rights of the first wife to food, clothing, and sexual intimacy.

We learn in 2 Sam. 5:13, 1 Chron. 3:1-9; 14:3 that King David had at least six wives and numerous concubines.

In 2 Samuel 12:8, God, speaking through the prophet Nathan, said that if David’s wives and concubines were not enough, He would have given David even more.

FYI: A concubine is a female who voluntarily enslaves and sells herself to a man primarily for his sexual pleasure.

In 1 Kings 11:3, we read that King Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines.

In 2 Chronicles 11:21, King Solomon’s son Rehoboam had 18 wives and 60 concubines.

So what am I saying? Am I saying that I think polygamy should be legalized? No. My point is that if people like Cal Thomas are going to screech about traditional marriage and warn against polygamy, he should first at least attempt to reconcile what the Bible has to say about the matter.
